These are the photos of the finished piece "Hera". The final piece is 60cms x 80cms. I used lots of different scraps of fabric and yarn, beads, sequins and some hat net. The piece was lightly melted and burnt in places to give an "antique" feel.

This is a sneak peek at a new piece of work called Hera ( you can see another work in progress in the previous entry). I'll post the full image once it's finished.

This a piece called Red Rabbit that's borrowed imagery from The Shins song Red Rabbits. I don't know much about what the song means but I was searching for inspiration one day when I was listening to this song. I've used a lot of embroidered stitching on the couple in this piece. I don't usually use a lot of heavy stitching but it was interesting to see the contrast between the muted colours in layered fabric and the bright colours in the thread.

Below is a work in progress that I just started last night.

Sneak peak of a new project!

Friday, May 25, 2007

Oops! It's been almost a month since my last post. I've been working hard trying to finish my new CD book. It's still not finished but hopefully soon it will be.

Above is a piece I finished recently. I'm not sure yet how I'm displaying her, whether she'll be a wallhanging or a quilt. There are work in progress photos of this piece in my new book.

Sometimes the fabrics are so beautiful half-way through the process that I wish I didn't have to sew them down!

Forgotten Tribe
Forgotten Princess
Forgotten Girl

These are some recent pieces I made as samples for a bigger project I'm working on. It's been a long time since I actually used a sketchbook and made samples. I usually jump straight in to making the final piece so it's actually fun to experiment and make mistakes and feel free about making lots of little pieces.

Two pieces based on Kate Bush's song Hounds of Love.

"Hounds of Love"
Featuring ears eyes and noses and 2 mini textiles shoes

"Two Steps on the Water"

It's in the trees!
It's coming!"

When I was a child:
Running in the night,
Afraid of what might be

Hiding in the dark,
Hiding in the street,
And of what was following me...

Now hounds of love are hunting
I've always been a coward,
And I don't know what's good for me.

(Well) Here I go!
It's coming for me through the trees.
Help me, someone!
Help me, please!

Take my shoes off,
And (i will) throw them in the lake,
And I'll be
Two steps on the water.

I found a fox
Caught by dogs.
He let me take him in my hands.

His little heart,
It beats so fast,
And I'm ashamed of running away

From nothing real--
I just can't deal with this,
But I'm still afraid to be there,

Among your hounds of love,
And feel your arms (surrounding) me.
I've always been a coward,
I never know what's good for me.

(well),here I go!
Don't let me go!
Hold me down!
It's coming for me through the trees.
Help me, darling
Help me, please!

Take my shoes off
And throw them in the lake,
And I'll be
Two steps on the water.

I don't know what's good for me.
I don't know what's good for me.
I need your love love love love love, yeah!
Your love!

Take your shoes off
And throw them in the lake!

Do you know what I really need?
Do you know what I really need?
I need love love love love love, yeah!

This is my first "proper" traditional style landscape. It was an experiment to see if I could use my techniques to tackle a well-used subject. I'm thinking of making some much larger pieces now as it's often easier for me to work big and this piece was fairly small for me- around A3 size. I don't know why I've never sewn any landscapes before as I live in a beautiful part of the countryside.
This was based on a photo I took from a boat on the River Dart in Dartmouth, Devon.
There are more images and info on this piece in my etsy store.

"Protectors of the Nest"

This is a piece I started sometime last year and finished on wednesday. It started out life as a bag but I decided it was much better as a wall hanging.

Thursday, February 08, 2007

This is a piece I listed on etsy today.
I made it a long time ago for a project called Cultural Plunder. My inspiration came from an Inuit seal-gut coat that can be seen in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, Devon.
